JOHOR BARU: A group of foreigners were taken on a special tour to a kelong (fish farm) here.
They were introduced to the traditional fish rearing system and it’s farmer’s lifestyle on the structure during the one-hour trip to Lido Village Farm recently.
Some of them expressed their excitement about the trip, saying it was a new experience for them apart from sailing in Malaysia.
A good tour: The yachters checking out the fish farm.
American Steve Cornelison, who was given a treat on a green mussel, said it was fresh and tasty.
He and the other yachtsmen were part of the early bird who arrived here for the Sail Malaysia Rally, which will be held from Nov 14 to Dec 20.
Johor Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said nearly 150 participants in 69 yachts would arrive at Danga Bay here on Nov 14 for the event.
He said the sailors are from Australia, Austria, Britain, Canada, Cayman Islands, France, Germany, Holland, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland and United States.
He said the group would be taken on a tour to the tourist destinations including those in Pontian and Tanjung Piai during their stay here from Nov 14 to Nov 16.
“The event can help promote the marina projects - Sebana Cove in Desaru and Puteri Harbour in Nesajaya - as well as to boost the tourism industry of Johor,’’ he said.
“Then, they would continue their voyage to Lumut, Perak and expected to arrive there on Nov 26,” said Hoo, adding the yachters would then continue their journey to Penang.
He said the rally would end in Langkawi on Dec 20.
British sailor Tom Sampson said he is looking forward for the trip.
“I enjoyed my stay in Malaysia very much when I came here on a business trip before this,’’ said Sampson, adding that he loved the local fruits such as rambutan, durian and mangosteen.
